Venetia Kelly's Traveling Show by Frank DelaneySat, 03/13/2010 - 2:00pm
Master storyteller, Frank Delaney, returns to the Hickory Stick Bookshop to sign his new book Venetia Kelly's Traveling Show.
“She sprang from the womb and waved to the crowd. Then smiled and took a bow.” And so we first meet Venetia Kelly, the beguiling actress at the center of this new, spellbinding, and epic novel by Frank Delaney, the bestselling author of Ireland and Shannon.
Interweaving historical figures including W. B. Yeats, and a host of unforgettable creations—“King” Kelly, Venetia’s violent, Mephistophelean grandfather; Sarah Kelly, Venetia’s mysterious, amoral mother; and even a truth-telling ventriloquist’s dummy named Blarney—Frank Delaney unfurls a splendid narrative that spans half the world and a tumultuous, eventful decade. If you are unable to attend, please call 860-868-0525 to reserve a copy.

"Venetia Kelly's Traveling
"Venetia Kelly's Traveling Show" has much that same effect. Nearly 70 pages go by before the real action begins, and the short, choppy chapters of exposition and introductions of seemingly minor characters are heavy on foreshadowing and short on forward motion.
But even that frustrating start offers pleasures that build with the chapters. Author Frank Delaney is a lovely writer, full of wry humor and the exquisite ability to convey a personality in a single artful phrase: "Miss Casey was a neighbor who also insisted she was an intimate friend. She demanded more attention than triplets, or so Mother said."
"Venetia Kelly" is narrated by Ben MacCarthy, the only child of an Irish farming couple who is born at the turn of the 20th century. Their land is prosperous, and young Ben is well-read and well-loved, a welcome respite from the poverty and neglect that riddles so much fiction from this epoch in Irish history.
