Children's Book Signing with Marilyn Singer!

As part of their Small Business Saturday celebrations, The Hickory Stick Bookshop will host a children’s book signing with critically acclaimed author/illustrator Marilyn Singer who has three new picture books for kids out this Fall: Who Are You Calling Weird (Words & Pictures, $17.99), Have You Heard About Lady Bird? Poems About Our First Ladies (Disney-Hyperion, $17.99), and Tallulah’s Ice Skates (Clarion Books, $17.99). The signing will be on Saturday, November 24th at 2pm.

Celebrate the weird, wonderful, and the downright bizarre in this compelling compendium of unusual animals. From the green fur of a three-toed sloth, to the pink and wiggly appendage of the star-nosed mole, there’s something new to marvel at on every page.

Delve into the forests, burrow under the ground, and dive into the deep to discover nature's most peculiar creatures and learn about their behavior, diet, and habitat, as well as folk beliefs about each animal.

Hidden away in Earth’s forests, caves, and oceans, these creatures might look or behave in peculiar ways but, as you will soon find out, every oddity serves a purpose:

  • the long, skeletal finger of an aye-aye, used by this lemur to tap on trees to locate hollow tunnels where delicious insects hide
  • the barrel-shaped eyes of a Pacific barreleye fish that turn upward to watch for prey above through its transparent head
  • the big, bulbous nose of a proboscis monkey designed to attract mates
  • the armor-like scales of a pangolin that are so tough that even lions and tigers can’t bite through them

Come face-to-face with the most curious creatures from across the globe, and decide for yourself who’s the weirdest of them all.

The role of First Lady has been defined differently by each woman who's held it, but all of them left an impact on our nation as partner of the commander in chief.

Incisive poetry by Marilyn Singer and energetic art by Nancy Carpenter provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of women-from Martha Washington to Eleanor Roosevelt to Lady Bird Johnson-who variously embraced the position and shied away from it, craved the spotlight and fiercely guarded their privacy, took controversial stands and championed for the status quo. Detailed back matter includes short biographies, quotations, and more.

Tallulah heads out into a winter wonderland to go ice skating and finds out that having fun is sometimes more important than being the best, in this new, snowy addition to the popular Tallulah series.

Tallulah is an accomplished ballerina, but she also loves to skate. After all, skating’s a lot like ballet—challenging, graceful, and glamorous. Tallulah is positive that with some hard work, she and her friend Kacie will be just as good on the ice as they are at dance. They'll be Super Skaters! But Kacie doesn’t want to rehearse fancy moves; she wants to have fun. So Tallulah practices by herself.

That is, until an encounter with a talented boy, which ends with an embarrassing mishap. Then Tallulah begins to realize that sometimes having fun is more important than being the best, a needed message for today’s goal-oriented, busy kids.

Marilyn Singer is the author of more than one hundred books for children and young adults, including Rutherford B., Who Was He?: Poems About Our Presidents; Feel the Beat!: Dance Poems that Zing from Salsa to Swing; Mirror Mirror; Echo Echo; and the Tallulah series. She lives with her husband and a variety of creatures in Brooklyn, New York, and Washington, Connecticut. Visit her at www.marilynsinger.net.
